According to Telematics Research Group (TRG), nearly half of 2007 automobiles offer iPod integration.

iPod support is the most sought after feature in cars, however, TRG says iPod integration is up from only 12% of vehicles last year.

Auxiliary input, however, is supported by nearly 60% of ‘07 models, and MP3 and WMA audio file support will be available on 75% of ‘07 vehicles.

iPod FM transmitters will be legal in the UK beginning December 8, 2006.

Ofcom, the regulating body for the UK communications industries, has finalized new legislation that allows consumers to use certain low-power FM transmitters.

According to BBC News:

“The devices fell foul of the Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1949, which forbids the use of radio equipment without a licence or an exemption. But strong consumer demand for the devices led Ofcom to rethink the legislation. Liberal Democrat MPs were also prominent in asking for iTrips and similar devices to be legalized. The new Wireless Telegraphy (Exemption) (Amendment) Regulations 2006 mean that certain low-power transmitters will now be legal.”

Market research firm Harris Interactive’s AutoTechcast on Wednesday reported that almost two-thirds (65 percent) of adult automobile owners who also have iPods or other MP3 players use the device in their vehicles.

Other findings:

  • Among all adult automobile owners, ownership of iPod/MP3 players is about one in 10 (12%).
  • Over half (52%) of those who use an iPod/MP3 player in their vehicle, and 14% of all adult car owners, indicate that they are “extremely or very likely” to purchase an audio interface for their next vehicle.
  • FM transmitters and cassette adapters are the least preferred.
  • The respondents said they prefer connecting through an auxiliary jack located on the stereo head unit (39%) or through either Bluetooth (23%) or Firewire/USB connections (19%).
  • Among all adult automobile owners, ownership of MP3/iPod players is about one in 10 (12%) and use in their vehicles varies considerably by age.
  • MP3/iPod ownership is substantially higher (31%) among 18 to 24 years olds, and not surprisingly, ownership rates decrease consistently among older
respondents, as low as five percent among those aged 55 and over.

The Washington Post reports that the upcoming season of MTV’s “Pimp My Ride” will incorporate iPods into more than a third of its transformations.

Look for a 1990 Toyota Celica outfitted with an iPod hookup that includes a ridiculously spacious two-terabyte hard drive (that's enough space to play music for more than a year without repeating a song).

In another episode, an ice cream truck is transformed into a mobile DJ's dream machine, with A Numark iDJ mixer and two docked iPods wired into the speaker system, allowing the vendor to spin a set of music for his customers.

Last night's show (episode 315: Urban Legends) "Las Vegas" featured NASCAR's Jimmie Johnson, who is called upon to judge a car show at the Montecito.

Delinda Deline, played by Molly Simms, has entered her 2005 Chevy Cobalt SS that she has totally customized herself.

She comments: "I did all the work, including mounting my iPod."

Very cool, Las Vegas writers.
